The Hip Revision Procedure
The Steps of the Operation
- Incision. We usually cut along your old scar. The incision may be longer than your first one.
- Exposure. We work carefully through scar tissue to reach the hip joint.
- Removal. We remove the old femoral head, the socket, and any cement. We use special tools to protect your remaining bone.
- Bone assessment. We check your bone quality. We measure the areas of bone loss.
- Bone grafting. We fill areas of bone loss with graft bone if needed. The graft heals into your bone over 6 to 12 weeks.
- New components. We fit a new socket, often with special supports. We insert a new femoral stem. Revision stems are usually longer for extra stability.
- Testing. We test the new hip for stability and movement.
- Closure. We close all the tissue layers carefully.
